1a. Zavvi Steelbook - Ecto-1 front cover
Release: February 7, 2022

Given past releases, I'm a little skeptical this is a "Zavvi exclusive" as Best Buy more often than not has the same steelbook for sale. However, in the current state of events, pre-ordering the Best Buy steelback lasts a few days for some titles like the Marvel Cinematic Universe titles so Zavvi is often a good "back-up" if you miss out on the Best Buy pre-orders - however, you will pay more and sometimes people have issues playing their all-region disc on certain Blu-ray players.

1b. Japan Steelbook, Regular and Exclusive

Would love a Jason/Ivan commentary, although I'm not holding my breath. More confidently, looking forward to a bunch of deleted scenes.

I also have wondered since 2019 if the Fan Fest panels were officially recorded and might see the light of day somewhere official. More specifically, they went through all the footage from the original movie. Might be kinda weird, since the material pertains to the original, but I'd kinda like to see any gems, including the FF stuff, put together into a featurette on an Afterlife release (if only because I don't need another edition of the original).

A director's/extended cut might be released as soon as the initial DVD/BluRay release, possibly in a similar setup to the release of the 2016 movie which came with the theatrical and extended editions.

I'd be interested in seeing an Extended edition, but I see it as a little unlikely. Some kind of extended edition was pretty standard for DVD and Blu-Ray releases of new films when those mediums were at their peak, but they seem to have stopped as the market for them has bottomed out with the increasing popularity of streaming. I know Spiral had a major setpiece cut out that was nowhere to be found on the home video releases, whereas the original seven Saw movies all had contemporaneous extended editions when they hit DVD\Blu-Ray. Ghostbusters 2016 and Suicide Squad are actually the two most recent films I can think of that had Extended Editions when they first hit Blu-Ray (I'm sure I'm forgetting something though, Snyder Cut was a pretty different scenario). Would be happy if I'm proved wrong though!

The movie was only 2 hours long I don't think they had any pressure to cut the film down. With all the delays, I like to think that we got the best version of any alternative takes. The movie had good pacing, but I wouldn't mind a slapped together 3-hour version. Definitely an extended gozer scene.

What I really want is all the deleted scene from all three movies. There's definitely stuff out there that didn't make the last 4K steelbook set

I could see them cutting it down to 2hrs to optimise screenings maybe? Or as a way to drive home release sales?

Scenes in the trailer or confirmed but not shown in the theatrical cut:

Hardware store guy approaching a spook.
Trevor and Phoebe chatting in the barn.
Schoolkids bullying Phoebe.
60’s version of the theme song.

I guess around February for the physical release?

Looking at different times, there's a few theaters pushing 20 showings a day. I know the Lord of the rings had to cut theater times for viewings, but those were 3 hours, after cutting it down. I'd assume if a 2.5hr afterlife made them film better they'd would have went with that.

It does seem like good marketing to have Blu-ray with extended cut. With everything going direct to streaming, I would like it, if it was out before Christmas .. Im sure we'll see some 3-4 film box set for $100.00 and I'll rebuy the original movies for the millionth time.

Amazon had a return date buy 1/31 with there preorder, but that really doesn't mean anything. Sonys Venom came out October 1st looks like a December 14th Blu-ray release. Which would make sense to release it right before Spider-Man. So Ghostbusters would be February following sonys model.. I'm curious how the money flows during covid.. Is it better to squeeze ever dollar out of the box office or have physical, streaming and theaters simultaneously?
I'd like it if it stayed in theaters through the new year, with streaming and physical right before Christmas. I know Disney was putting movies in theaters and streaming the same time, but a lot of those movies weren't really that good.

I think for ATC, all the versions for the DVD and Blu-rays were same day October 11. So I guess Afterlife's will be around February 15 or 22. 3 months later.

So I suppose worth noting in this thread, too, in an interview from a couple weeks ago, when asked about a director's cut, Jason Reitman said, "I've always felt like the-the-the-the cut I release is my cut I've ever done a director's cut on one of my movies I'm proud of the way that we finish the films and it's hard for me to imagine when I look back at my other films, all I want to do is make them shorter. Not longer."

So on the surface, seems like no extended edition.

But if you're in speculation mode: Jason, in this interview, is still on the theatrical promotion tour and downplaying any news about the home entertainment release. And as Romain noted, he did the interview a couple weeks ago - so circumstances could have changed since then...

Even if there is no extended cut (still crossing fingers) I’m excited to see what fan edits can be made here. A lot if the issues I had with the first half can be solved with some scissors. You can literally cut the cutaways to Crunch bars, Twinkies, "Who ya gonna call?", Callie's eviction, trim Ray's exposition... etc. etc.

The Total Protonic Reversal cut of ATC was substantial improvement and I’m confident there is still a definitive cut of ATC to be made.

Might give Afterlife a shot myself.

During the pandemic, most studios have moved to a 45 day window before digital and physical release. I noticed that Venom 2 was only a month and a half before they released it digitally this week. So we may see digital release for this as early as the first week in January with the physical release shortly after.

How much it’s making in theaters may impact that, too.

Venom: There Will Be Carnage became available on November 23rd. Physical street date is December 14th. The same one-month gap would put Ghostbusters: Afterlife on 4K/Blu-ray/DVD on February 1st, 2022.

I can't wait until you folks document every one of Egon's degrees and add the info to the wiki.

Amazon.de (Germany) - "Ghostbusters 1 / 2 / Afterlife Ultimate 4K Ultra HD Collection - 8 Discs (3x 4K UHD, 3x Blu-ray, 2x Bonus-Disc) Amazon Exclusive Edition"

Sounds like the "Ghostbusters & Ghostbusters II, 5 Disc Set, SteelBook Edition [2 x UHD, 3 x Blu-ray]" + UHD, Blu-ray, and a new bonus disc.

So the question is, what is on the second bonus disc.

It would not shock me if the second bonus disc is not really a "bonus disc," but that Ghostbusters: Afterlife's standard 4K UHD release is 3 discs (1 UHD, 2 BD) and the standard BD is 2 discs.
